Hi, Ive been having pain in my back for several weeks now. Literally woke up with it one morning, at the base of my spine. Has come and gone a few times. Have spoken briefly to the rhuematology nurse who said its very rare to get RA in the back and its probably down to bad posture from sore feet etc.

Ive been given some insoles from the podiatrist but an having great difficulty in finding shoes that will accomodate them. My husband suggested flippers as they are so wide!

Although Im not huge- size 14 sometimes on a really good day a 12, Im trying to lose a few pounds in the hope that this will ease the joints etc. Does anyone else find back pain a problem and do they have any suggestions.

Thanks so much.

love Heatherxxx

Hi Heather

I can't help with the back pain itself, but have quite hefty inserts for my shoes. I have found "Hotter" shoes to be the best. The toe section is deep and the shoes come in standard and wide fitting. If you look on line you will see a list of stockists where you can try on the diffferent styles.

I use Shoetailor.com - come in all widths - I have eee fit. I'm back with Orthotics in March so am also going to check out Hotter shoes as Jean suggests. Hope you manage to find something - bad foot pain definitely affects the back.

Hi Heather,
I also have inserts that were supposedly made to fit, but had the same problem finding shoes, Jean's right about Hotter shoes though they are almost comfortable and although they are not cheap, they do come in sizes up to a 9. I ended up buying two pairs the same but different sizes which means I can wear the insert in one but not the other and as the inersoles are removeable, if you have another pair you can double up on the innersole to provide greater padding to the foot that feels like its walking on ball bearings.

Yeap you have too look for the i call it .( old ladyies shoes ) good make wide and roomie .If you go to a good shop i have found some very fashable shoes flat wide but look good .Like ankle boots and get a good thick sole which bends about .Flat shoes good soles wide roomie round toed leather suppotive and you will crack it Josop isbel i like ( spelt wrong ) Hush puppies .Don,t bother to look at Marks and spenser as feet people tell me not supportive enough .No heels or hard leather or pointed toes .

round toed and made of leather and very supportive .
Back pain i can not be doing with doctors .I have promlems my self and a numb leg find the docs useless

But i went to a private phyiso about £40 and well worth the money .Had all the ans there and then
set of excises and a rurfural too NHS .

See if the RA DEPT have there own phyiso .Might be a good start as mine asks the R.A man if she is not sure or happy about things .

Also the private phyiso concated the R.A PEOPLE .
G,ps where quite useless .
Guess the r.a nurses would not know too much

Sorry but I'm probably not going to be helpful here at all! I have tried just about every shoe on the planet, believe me, and the idea of flippers quite appeals! I gave up with expensive shoes that for some reason or another simply hurt my feet and now get expensive trainers which offer really good width and support throughout the foot and ankle. And ... my insoles fit without any trouble!

What I would say from my experience is that it is always important to choose footwear with a good metatarsal arch which supports the foot from underneath. This helps to keep the long metatarsal bones in the correct position avoiding long term problems. Fashion shoes and 'cheaper' shoes and trainers don't have this. When the metatarsal heads suffer damage there is little that can be done other than surgery. Walking on pebbles constantly is not pleasant!!

I have got strange feet though having had metatarsal heads removed on each foot. So perhaps I'm just odd! Not sure what I'm going to put on my feet for my brother's wedding in June!!!

My physio has referred me to orthotics as he says they can give you some kind of bar to put in your shoes to support the metatarsals (apparently mine are dropping). It must be a common thing with RA as Lyn says. I go in March so will have to see what they come up with.

Those bars are supposed to be effective if used in time. See here. Think my feet were way past salvaging ... walked on pebbles for far too long!!Huh Next step (excuse the pun!) for me, no feet Blink Blink

Certainly worth mentioning to the Orthotist.

Hi Heather and welcome!BigGrin

Sorry that you have back pain- I think that the others are right it might well be posture- I am DEAD JEALOUS of you being a size 14.....I remember that! lol

But any poundage that you can shift is going to help.

I have just booked to see a physio re my back. It has been a prb since having my 2 yr old.

I do have probs with my neck tho and that IS the RA.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but just have to ask Lyn, how are you getting by now and how come the rheumy let you feet get to this stage?

I have some back pain, especially at the end of the day, after pushing the double buggy etc. I did ask for a referral to OT from my GP but heard nothing so far. Was wondering about podiatry too, so need to ask again. Feet are so important, mine are "flat" now, as my daughters meep telling me, and laughing at me!!!

Hiya, thanks for the replies, Ive actually been to see the podiatrist (actually, funny story, when Kev (must husband) and I walked in, we thought he was a work experience lad at first, seriously he looked about 15!!!!! Anyway, he gave me two insoles which are just like flippers really! Anyway, Ive been struggling to find shoes to fit them. One of the reasons being that come the weekend Im too tired to go shopping and walk around to look for suitable shoes. Catch 22 really. Anyway, one of you lovely ladies suggested happier feet and I have a catalogue on its way. bit expensive I know, but the end justifies the means if that makes sense!!

Love the "walking on pebbles" Lyn, just what it feels like sometimes!!

Hi Julie!
Just one of those things I guess. Had RA for 22 years and in the early days, apart from massive doses of oral steroids, nothing was ever done and treatment availability very poor. By the time I couldn't actually put my feet on the floor any more, due to the pain and discomfort, there was nothing that could be done apart from surgery to remove the metatarsal heads. The surgeon left a couple in place to 'maintain the structure' of each foot. The results were amazing and after 4 or 5 months I was able to walk normally for the first time in about 15 years, albeit a complete size smaller from shortening. However, a few years later and the problems returned in the remaining metatarsal heads so I'm back on insoles and my Reeboks! (Take them off and I'm back beachcombing on the pebbles!) I can actually walk fine in my trainers, no-one would think there was anything wrong, take them off and it's a different story. When I saw the Podiatrist in December she suggested I mention the problems to the Rheumy, but my Feb appointment is now postponed until June, so it's a waiting game!

Julie, once the metatarsals drop, the heads, the large bony bits behind the toes, can quickly become inflamed and that's when the damage occurs. By getting proper support in the early stages major problems can be avoided.

Good luck

So sorry to hear that the damage was allowed to progress so far Lyn. I'm like you in that I can't walk anywhere with no shoes on - not even in the house. I will definitely take heed and make sure I follow this up. Thanks so much for all the info - the 'bars' aren't at all what I expected.

For Heather:
Just thought I would add a bit to wide fitting shoes - when/if you find that Hotter are not working for you try EASY B wide fitting shoes (about the same price as Hotters). What makes them different is that they give you more box room for your toes than Hotter. I find them marvellous and am now in 4E fitting (they do a lot wider than that). You can send for them straight from the factory in Northampton and once you have paid for the initial delivery then they will keep sending you more ( and paying for the return of shoes) until you find the best ones to suit.

I will try to remember to bring a couple of the catalogues with me to the April get together.

BACK PAIN:

I did have very bad back pain and was given a belt to wear this did help initially. It seems in my case it is osteo arthritis in the lower spine.

If things get really bad lie on the floor knees bent, draw up a chair close to your bottom and then place your legs on the chair so everything is angled. Then relax.

Lie on the floor roll your knees up to your chest link hands if possible and gentle rock side to side. I did this at regular intervals at the stopping places when coming back from France and it helped loads.

Lie on the floor, bend zee knees, hands gently on the floor and then take knees them from one side to the other (gently)

HOPE THIS HELPS

Sue

Thanks for all the replies ladies, will let you know how I get on with the shoes and will try the excercises. Ive rung my local rheummy nurse for some details on hydrotherapy that my rhuemmy specialist and I spoke about last year, and also some physio.

Thank you again for all your help and support, much appreciated!!
